SUPPORT AND SOLIDARITY: WE ARE IN NEED OF INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS

The serious incidents, disproportionate and beyond any limits, involving the Spanish police force these past few days in Catalonia, require total condemnation by our organisation.

We cannot hide our pain and the profound sadness that overcomes us at this time.

For this reason, we ask you to closely follow events that are occurring here, because, with YOUR SUPPORT, we are less vulnerable.

We need you to take on the role of observers and GUARDIANS of CIVIL RIGHTS and the freedom of expression worthy of any democracy in the 21st century.

El Graner and the Mercat de les Flors, as public institutions, since their beginning have committed to nurturing culture and freedom of expression, and we stand against any forms of violence.

Our solidarity lies with the people of Catalonia and of Barcelona, with diversity and dialogue. SAY NO TO VIOLENCE.

Please keep watching over us and stand beside us.

We are counting on your vigilance. Gratitude, peace and freedom for all.

2018 CALL FOR RESIDENCY PROJECTS

In 2018 Graner launches an open call for residency projects (from February to December 2018). This call addresses artists, local or international groups who work in the fields of dance and performance. They may be developing a piece or an investigation process, with a focus on choreography, body or movement. The 2018 call for residency focuses on two modalities: investigation and creation. The proposal can be submitted until the 17th of September. On the 16th of October the selected projects will be announced on the websites www.granerbcn.cat, www.mercatflors.cat and on our social networks.

Concept map of residences / affection / support – 2016

The artistic residences of the creators temporarily working at Graner configure a constellation of relations between the creators and the structures that support them.  With this idea in mind, and taking into account the affections and each project itineraries, we have tried to express such relations on an Artists in Residence Map 2016. It is a map under construction (it has been updated for the last time by the end of March), which simply aims at underlining the links that take place throughout the creation or the research phase of an artistic project.

Open call residency programme Graner 2016

Graner is the centre for creation and study of the body and movement language of Barcelona. It is framed within the Art Factories program of the Barcelona City Council and is managed by Mercat de les Flors, in collaboration with APDC (Catalonia’s Dance Professionals Association) and ACPDC (Catalonia’s Professional Dance Companies Association). Graner aims to have an impact on different contexts of the creative fabric acting through several different work lines: creation, internationalization, thought, education and proximity. It hosts dance artist residencies, develops artistic cooperation projects with other cultural agents and promotes the integration of the centre within its neighborhood, among other objectives. Graner launches its first open call for artistic residencies 2016.

Project submission period: from 1th  August to 20th September 2015.

CIRCUS TODAY

Over the past few decades, it has become clear that the new style of circus is more than a passing fad. It is an ethical and aesthetic choice intrinsically linked to the life philosophy of a generation of artists who are increasingly moving away from the aesthetics and values of the past.

Nowadays, contemporary circus is as varied and multifaceted as the personalities of the people creating and performing it. As a performance discipline, circus has  always put technique, be it acrobatics or balancing acts, at the service of ideas and emotions. However, it has increasingly moved towards minimalism, a trend that is consistent with the fact that these days bold feats for the mere sake of being bold no longer represent the principal goal of artists or the main interest of audiences.

Though the natural ebb and flow of interest and the disappearance of venues do have an impact, but I believe these are only peripheral. Instead, I suspect that this tendency towards minimalism is mainly due to the fact that today’s generations of artists have reconnected with what drives human beings on a deep, basic level, and they wish to share it with spectators in an immediate and personal way. We’re currently seeing the proliferation of companies that put on small-scale shows in the ring or in small tents for a reduced number of spectators. The return to the ring marks a return to the circle, the most immediate and pure of all communicative spaces. There is a  lot of truth, a lot of personal experience in what these types of shows wish to convey. Obsessions, doubts, experiences, often transmitted through poetic language – what other language could it be? – that is as spontaneous as it is abstract.

The Mercat de les Flors presents a series of shows – pieces of distilled poetry – that vary greatly in terms of identity and style, but share an authenticity in terms of how they convey their authors’ message. At the  same time, they also provide an accurate look at a cross section of the tendencies dominating circus production in Catalonia and Europe today.

Dance workshop with JEREMY NELSON

m.a.p. – mudances aula pedagògica at Graner
JEREMY NELSON
from 18th to 22nd Novembre 2013
from 9.30 to 13.00

Contemporary Dance Workshop
Workshop for dance professionals: dancers, teachers, choreographers, advanced students.

The classes are influenced by Nelson’s 25 years of continuing study in the work of Barbara Mahler and Susan Klein, and more recent years of studies in Alexander Technique®, Bodymind Centering® and Feldenkreis Method.

The focus of the class is to integrate this investigation and alignment work into movement. We will focus mostly on our skeletal structure and its connections, allowing more mobility and suppleness in the superficial muscles and more efficient use of the floor. The intention is for each student to experience and develop the awareness of their own body and recognize its individuality.
CV Jeremy Nelson

Jeremy Nelson was  dancer with The Stephen Petronio Dance Company in New York from 1984-1992. In 1991, he won a New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Award for outstanding performance with that company and in 2004 was a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for choreography.

He was a Gowanus Arts Exchange Space Grant Recipient in 1994, a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence in 1994/1995, a 2003/2004 artist-in-residence at Dance Space Center in New York. In 2005 he received funds from Arts International’s Touring Pilot Program and in 2006 was awarded a NYFA BUILD Grant.

He is a member of the teaching faculty at Movement Research in New York and a guest artist at Connecticut College. In the United States, he has taught as part of the American Dance Festival, and at various universities including New York University Tisch School of the Arts and Bennington College. CAET + L’Estruch

Two art factories (el Graner and L’Estruch) and a local production centre (CAET – Terrassa Performing Arts Centre) add up their value to foster our contemporary creation. Network-based work strengthens the effects of each institution’s support. The first step has been to create an artistic commission formed by representatives from all three centres, which selects the projects that will take part in the programme. The selected projects will have the chance to rehearse and produce at el Graner, wrapping up technical work and final rehearsals at l’Estruch in Sabadell and finally premiering at TNT Festival in Terrassa.

#FOLLOW FRIDAY 80

Don’t wait for Friday!

El Graner and the Temporada Alta Festival have gone into partnership, starting from this year’s Festival and to be continued over coming years.

The partnership is being launched at the Temporada Alta Festival and will focus on three aspects:

  1.  A 48-hour meeting, behind closed doors, in a house with the artists involved. The meeting will discuss how to build bridges together that will act as production enablers for future creative processes (21- 22 November).
  2.  Three #FF80 projects to be staged as part of the Catalan Theatre Event Booking Agents’ Week organised by the Temporada Alta Festival (21- 25 November).
  3.  An invitation to four or five international booking agents who are willing to implement a follow-up and mid-term review of one of the future projects by #FF80 artists (in association with the Ramon Llull Institute).

(*) #FF80 takes its name from Follow Friday – recommendations made on Fridays using the social network Twitter. Users make recommendations to other users about what they consider to be worth following. This is what we want to do with the #FF80 artists: recommend them to the general public as well as booking agents and directors of centres for performing arts.

(**) #FF80 comprises Catalan artists of the same generation (born in the 1980s), who have studied and worked abroad. These are artists who move between the Catalan scene and the scene abroad, largely due to the fragile nature of the world of theatre at home. All of them work with artistic formulas that strengthen hybrid theatre, using a combination of languages. All #FF80 artists attending have received a written invite (approx. 15 Catalan artists or artists residing in Catalonia).

(***) #FF80 aims to create direct and long-term working relationships of mutual understanding between artists and booking agents and/or directors of centres for performing arts.
