Poliana Lima and Yinka Esi Graves will share their choreographic research next October through a two-session workshop.
A Place to Dance: A Workshop stems from the research that artists Poliana Lima and Yinka Esi Graves are carrying out in 2024, where they share their choreographic languages; Poliana is more connected to contemporary dance and improvisation, while Yinka comes from flamenco. Both creators are interested in generating a common space of the body that transcends genres and different dance styles. The laboratory they propose at Graner addresses the central elements of their research and is based on participation and commitment as decisive factors for imagining dance as a community practice.
Poliana Lima is a choreographer, dancer, and teacher based in Madrid since 2010, and she began her creations in 2011. In 2024, she will premiere The Common Ground. In 2022, she premiered Oro Negro at the Autumn Festival in Madrid. In 2020, she premiered Las cosas se mueven pero no dicen nada at the Teatros del Canal in co-production with the Festival Días da Dança/Teatro Rívoli in Porto and the Centre National de la Danse* in Paris. In 2021, she was a selected artist for Aerowaves. Taking the body as the central object of her expression, she explores the possibilities of creating a poetic stage that can communicate simply and deeply with the audience. Themes such as identity and memory are recurring in her creations, as well as the relationship between creation and pedagogy, which she considers a fundamental part of her work as an artist.
Yinka Esi Graves is a British creator, choreographer, and flamenco artist. Her work explores the links between flamenco and other contemporary forms from a personal perspective rooted in the Afro-diaspora. Her first solo stage work, The Disappearing Act, premiered at the Flamenco Festival in Nîmes (France) in 2023 and has been presented at numerous international festivals, including the Grec Festival, La Bâtie, and the Avignon Festival, among others.
