Open studio by Julia Romero

Julia Romero, resident artist at Graner 2026 through an open call in the emerging category, opens up her creative process for the piece Sample Collection (BELLÁNIMA).

Julia investigates the figure of the Romantic ballerina as an aesthetic model of her time and her connection to illness, the spectral, and aesthetic violence, repositioned within a contemporary context in which she would float on high heels rather than ballet pointe shoes. The exploration branches into two antagonistic universes—the oneiric and the clinical—which are in constant dialogue: the idyllic and the monstrous, the sublime and the sinister, fantasy and reality… linking the idea of the acte blanc and illness as the “night side of life.” The research explores the overflow and hybridization of urban and underground languages such as voguing and waacking with tools and codes from contemporary dance, performance, and theatre.
