Alberto Velasco

Hi, I’m Alberto Velasco. I’m an artist, and even though it’s hard for me to write that word without the imposter syndrome, it’s the truest reflection of my nature. I come from dance, theater, dance-theater, some television and film, the multidisciplinary arts, and I’m driven by the desire to create an honest expression in everything I do. I use whatever is necessary to convey what moves through me, transforming it into art that makes us feel just a little less alone in this hostile yet beautiful world we live in I try to keep evolving, in constant transformation and contradiction. Most likely, by the time you read this, it will no longer reflect who I am. Or maybe it will.

SACRESIZE (2025) is a ballet of fat bodies inspired by Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Once, I had a dream: A ballet for people with bodies like mine. A ballet of fat bodies. But a BALLET ballet. Not a mockery of ballet through fat bodies, which is what they’re often used for on stage. Nor the exotic or singular within a normative ensemble. Using the beauty of those bodies to re-code the language of classical/contemporary ballet and glorify them. Then that dream merged with another: Choreographing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Later, those two dreams became one: SACRESIZE. A ballet of fat bodies inspired by Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Now we’re going to make it a reality. The time is now.
