Álvaro de la Peña

Graduated by the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático y Danza de Barcelona (Institut del teatre, 1981) in the Pedagogy of Dance specialty, Álvaro de la Peña has danced with the Contemporary Ballet of Barcelona and with the company Heura. 1983 works at the Folkwang Tanz Studio (Essen, Germany), directed by Susan Lynke, under the artistic direction of Pina Bausch. For three seasons he dances as a soloist at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. He participates as an actor-dancer in shows by Iago Pericot and José María Rodero. He dances with the company of Avelina Argüelles and Nats Nus and participates as a choreographer in the Dart company. Later he creates, with Juan Carlos García and Claudio Zulián, Lanònima Imperial.

In 1993 he founded the company Iliacan, creating more than 20 shows. For a time, he works as a dance professor at the Institut del Teatre, as well as giving classes and workshops to different centers, national and international. Since 2009 he develops a line of work, under the denomination of “Dance for anybody”, with which they try to approach the dance to society. Starting from the premise that, although the dance is not for anyone, anyone can have access to it. He has arranged his activity in the Iliacan company with the collaboration of a choreographer in opera, theater and television.

He was the founder of La Caldera, a cultural association that received the 2006 National Dance Prize awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Last project in residence

Zak! is the result of the Barris en Dansa project, a contemporary dance performance featuring around one hundred amateur performers of all ages from different neighborhoods of Barcelona: Gràcia (La Caldera), Sant Andreu (Sat!), and La Marina (El Graner). In each of these neighborhoods, a part of the show was created through a series of weekly meetings held since September 2012 at each center, culminating in a collective presentation of the different parts to form the full performance.

Zak! emerges from space and movement. It lives in the energy of the wind as it flows between bodies. Zak! is born of humanity—it is our vitality, the vibration that connects us. Zak! is everywhere. Zak! begins within us; it is the origin of everything, it is our emotions—and we are all Zak!. Join Zak! Dance, laugh, and share—don’t fall behind, surround yourself with us, feed off it—and you’re already one of us!
