Amaranta Velarde

Amaranta Velarde is a choreographer, dancer, and pedagogue. In her practice, she explores the friction between the artificial and representational and the organic and impulsive. Graduated in 2004 from CODARTS, Rotterdam, she has worked in the Netherlands with Bruno Listopad on numerous productions presented at festivals such as Spring Festival and Something Raw. In 2011, she moved to Barcelona, where she created her pieces Lo Natural (2012), Hacia una estética de la buena voluntad (2013), Mix-en-Scene (2015), Apariciones sonoras (2019), and Desbordes (2022), presented in venues such as Festival Grec, Mercat de les Flors, Museo Reina Sofía, and the Brigittines Theatre in Brussels. In parallel, she collaborates with artists such as Cris Blanco, Ola Maciejewska, and El Conde de Torrefiel, and teaches at the Barcelona Higher Conservatory of Dance.

Latest project in residence

Focusing on practices related to the notions of instability, uncertainty, and transience, the research project Errática (2026) seeks to subvert conscious and voluntary intention to give rise to erratic and uncontrollable movement. This invitation to chaos and disorder in action uses the predictable and familiar as an anchor from which to distort intention and movement. The work is situated in the paradox of bodies moved by forces beyond voluntary choreography: where the gesture arises from unconscious kinetic impulse and the influence of the environment. The project aims to test the agency and sovereignty of the will, exploring the tension between two seemingly opposing modes of action: dispossessed, involuntary movement, and action constructed and sustained with full awareness and intention.
