Janet Novás

Hello, I’m Janet Novás. I’m a dancer, creator, and teacher. In 2007, I began creating and developing my own solo projects, and later I continued with some collaborations with other artists who worked from a place similar to mine; I would say we worked by sharing our solitudes. My work is built from this encounter with the intimate, with what one recognizes and belongs to them, and that is sacred. I seek kind perspectives and spaces where the body can exist according to its own nature. Returning to the place of origin seems urgent and necessary to me. That’s why I keep creating and dancing, because I feel the responsibility to remind people of the power that a body holds.

Residency project

She Night is the provisional title that marks the beginning of a research process in which Janet Novás is immersing herself in 2024. It takes as its starting point various fictional characters from the book Mundos alternos (a selection of stories written by the pioneers of 20th-century science fiction based on ¡El futuro es mujer!). The book highlights seven pioneers of science fiction (Judith Merril, Zenna Henderson, Joanna Russ, Doris Pitkin Buck, Wilmar H. Shiras, C. L. Moore, and Mildred Clingerman), showcasing their contributions to the genre and exploring themes such as the power of the mind and the struggle against difference. Fiction allows these authors to expand the mind in a special way, connecting with the most intimate fears, longings, and desires.
