The joy to belong (2026) grows out of a collaboration between the Madrid-born choreographer Jesús Rubio Gamo and Dance On Ensemble, a German company made up of dancers aged between 40 and 70. Eight dancers, four from each company and of different ages and styles, take part in a choreography that stems from Rubio Gamo’s interest in bringing together the poetics of the group and the poetics of the individual. Themes such as accumulation, interconnection and intergenerational transmission guide the piece. The starting point is a childhood memory in which a collective game revealed, for the first time, a feeling of happiness and belonging. Thirty-five years later, Jesús Rubio asks himself whether it might be possible to recover something of that feeling in order to create a choreography today.
