LaCerda

LaCerda is a contemporary dance company created with the intention of exploring on stage the concept of ritual and the mysteries it entails. It works from experience, sensation, and visceral expression, aiming to reach the primary nature of Dance, which precedes the Word and the Concept. The company is defined by a strong aesthetic imprint, linked to the nature of ritual dances and the poetic dimension of movement. It was founded in 2013 in the city of Barcelona by María Carbonell and Edward Tamayo Ruiz. Since 2019, the artistic direction has been led by three Latin American artists: Edward Tamayo (Colombia), Johann Pérez (Venezuela), and Valentina Azzati (Argentina). In 2021, dancer and choreographer Aina Lanas (Catalonia) joined the team as a performer, along with Júlia Vernet (Catalonia), responsible for production and conceptual development.

From Edward Tamayo’s training sessions and LaCerda’s rehearsals, a new methodology and dance language emerged: the Mantra, a loop-based choreographic composition practice built on rhythmic foot sequences in relation to the pelvis, space, and the group. With this new creation, LaCerda seeks to continue exploring all the potential of the Mantra—rhythmic, choreographic, and theatrical—enhancing the group dimension with more performers on stage, the spatial dimension with more complex floor patterns, and the rhythmic dimension with different musical patterns coexisting in space. The project’s main inspiration is music itself, a fundamental cultural value that synthesizes a worldview and a relationship with the world, crystallizing into specific rhythms.
