Mercedes Dassy

Mercedes Dassy, performer and choreographer from Brussels. After her training at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (S.E.A.D.) in Austria, she dances as an interpreter for Liesbeth Gruwez and Leslie Mannès, among others. In 2018, she created the solo i-clit, with which she inaugurated a prolific and radical body of work exploring the intersection between the intimate and the political. That same year, she received the Jo Dekmine Theater Prize from the Doms, which recognizes promising artists and creations. Building on her previous work, she presented her second solo, B4 summer, characterized by a magnetic presence, sometimes placid and haunting, sometimes raw and frenetic. Once again, she was awarded, this time with the jury prize at the Podium dance competition in the solo/duo category. Then, in 2022, she moved away from solo work to create the quartet RUUPTUUR, a new opus aimed at telling the story of collective power. This group choreography, with futuristic elements, combines movement with the figure of the centaur through the use of an articulated costume.

After five years of incredible production and at just 34 years old, Mercedes Dassy is now opening a new cycle of research. Fascinated by the iconic figure of the singer, she is focusing on the voice and writing, which she wishes to explore through her own texts. For this new chapter, she will create the solo Spongebabe in L.A. (4 love & anxiety) in fall 2024, and she is an associated artist at Charleroi Danses for the 2023-24 season.
