Pablo Lilienfeld and Federico Vladimir

Pablo Lilienfeld and Federico Vladimir

We have been together since 2014, living and working between Brussels and A Coruña. Our work has become intertwined with our relationship. “Narrating is caring,” we always say: we start from intimacy to explore representations of collectivity that question hegemonic forms of belonging and storytelling. Using speculative fiction as a tool for world-building, we create spaces where the domestic, the playful, the marginal, and desire converge. Our performances, films, and installations are populated by family members, friends, lovers, viruses, ghosts, and other companions.

Residency project

Mónica is the name of both our mothers. This coincidence has fascinated us since we started our relationship: both were born in Argentina in the 1950s, daughters of European refugees fleeing Nazi Germany and communist Yugoslavia. Mónica Lilienfeld was a painter and died at a young age in 1986. Mónica Pezdirc posed nude throughout her life in erotic photographs taken by her husband. The images created by our two mothers are the starting material for this new project. Mónica seeks to subvert linear and teleological genealogy. Horizontal maternal and non-heteronormative relationships are as important as patrilineal verticality. In Mónica, family trees intertwine, forming a tentacular genealogy of non-hegemonic motherhoods and speculative soap operas.
