Poliana Lima

My name is Poliana Lima. I am a dance creator and educator. I was born in Brazil and migrated 14 years ago. I understand dance as a way of being in the world, a form of embodied thought. As a creator, the themes of identity and memory have always been very present, as both a necessity and a driving force. I feel that creation and pedagogy go hand in hand in my artistic practice; both are ways of continuing to learn and share in action. Putting the body into it. This is what I love most about dedicating myself to dance: the awareness that, whether we want to or not, we always put our bodies into it.

Residency project

Belongings is a project in collaboration between Yinka Esi Graves and myself, with guidance from Juan Carlos Lérida. Since late 2020 and 2021, I had been trying to set the stage for collaborating with Yinka, and now it has happened. So I can say that the project is primarily about desire: the desire to meet and connect with other people, to learn, and consequently, to transform each other. Formally, Belongings has two main axes as starting points: thinking about our bodies as a space where multiple belongings intersect and play out, and on the other hand, being able to investigate the concept of spirit in dance.
