Venus Jasper

My name is Venus Jasper. I am a queer visual artist, singer-performer, educator, writer, and curator based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. My work blends ritual, ecology, and queerness to envision post-capitalist futures and more-than-human kinship and offers neuroqueer and transhistoric perspectives on culture, spirituality, and the self. Practically speaking, I like to create ritualistic performances, immersive installations, video, text, and music — in which I appear as embodied alter-egos, such as a pagan high-priestess, pop-musician, or ritual caretaker.

Some highlights include EARTHSHRINE (2022): a large solo exhibition at MU Hybrid Art House Eindhoven that presented itself as a speculative and contemporary sacred space for soils, and the bog-fury invoking music-performance OAKBaLLZ and EELSKin (2023) at Rupert, Lithuania. Currently, I am investigating wetlands, ecogrief, swamps, ancestry, and trauma. Besides my art, I am trying to manage life in late-stage capitalism with chronic illness and a hyper-sensitive nervous system.

Last project in residence

During my residency at Graner, I am preparing and developing a live performance for the “Following the Sun” cycle at Museu Tàpies, a series of performances curated by Gabriel Virgilio Luciani. I am currently working on a dark industrial-gothic music record called Bzz Bzz, a result of a personal exploration of murky, angry, and transcendental feelings heated and molded together in the crucible of climate decay, rising fascisms, and the lethal death spasms of Empire. In this record, I take you across an ocean on a rusty vessel, leading towards a dark and animistic island where murky bogs are sacred. Sonically, this world is built from samples of insects, water, storms, metals, and chainsaws, and it carries both acoustic and electronic instruments, in support of eccentric and haunting vocals. My plan at Graner is to work on a simplified solo-performance, Sonic Swamp Lamenting , based on live noise-music, voice, and embodiment, which can channel elements of my record Bzz Bzz and set up a sonic mood of personal and planetary lamenting. For me, it will be the first time to perform this music by myself, without backing musicians or a concert hall.
