Caixa d’eines (Toolbox) 2020-21

For the second consecutive year, Arte Factum was responsible for the mediation of the Graner educational program for the 2020-21 school year (Box of Tools), which was supported by the Pla de Barris of La Marina. Under the title “Contact Zones”, throughout the year, the relationships between live arts and pedagogy were explored from a perspective that placed the body, experimentation, and research at the crossroads between the artistic and educational scenes. Through the creation of learning and experience communities that inhabited the “in-between places” of art and education, spaces and times were proposed to share questions about what we did and how we did it, elaborate the meanings of our practices, and open spaces for conversation to exchange tools, procedures, and ways of doing.

  • In the children’s cycle, the children shared Bea Fernández’s practice, “The body as an event that shows itself”; in primary school, Xavier Manubens proposed “House of the Seas”, and in secondary school, Mariona Naudin with “Laughing and Crying” and Alba Rihe with “CISCA (Symbiotic Inter-species Colony of Curiosities and Attitudes)”. Through these learning communities, children and young people approached practices related to perception and movement, fantasies of the self, and gamification.

In the 2020-21 school year, Contact Zones engaged in dialogue with three preschools (EBM El Cotxet, EBM Niu d’infants, and EBM Collserola), a family space (La casa de los colores), five primary schools (El Polvorí, Enric Granados, SEAT, Ramon Casas, and Bàrkeno), and two high schools (Montjuïc and Domènech i Montaner). All of them located in the La Marina neighborhood and its surroundings.

Taking listening, observation, and action as central axes, the program Contact Zones proposed a working methodology based on collaboration and the shifting of positions between artists, teachers, and students. This facilitated the transversality of learning, circulated situated practices and knowledge, and mobilized the roles (of power) articulated between those who teach and those who learn (in the educational scene), or those who perform and those who observe (in the artistic scene).

The Graner educational program is part of the Caixa d’Eines program, driven by the Pla de Barris of Barcelona, which aims to introduce artistic practices into the school curriculum to reduce inequalities between the city’s neighborhoods. Graner implements its educational program linked to Caixa d’Eines in primary and secondary schools in the La Marina de Port neighborhood.
