The first quarter of the company. Aina Lanas with the collaboration of Irene Baeza (Iby) with the 3rd grade students of the Antaviana School Institute has been a period of landing and familiarization with the language and methodology proposed by the choreographers in the group . With the collaboration of teachers Quim Cubarsí and Carme Salinas, the students have been entering the dynamics and principles of movement and rhythms of urban dances, working on key elements such as musicality, improvisation and the connection with the stage space . The relationship between body and camera has been particularly worked on, exploring how dance can become a visual language beyond the movement itself.
During these months it was possible to go through different moments of the process. A first moment of introduction and awareness: during the first sessions, an atmosphere of trust and curiosity was generated that led to discovery, where the students had the opportunity to experience different techniques and tools of the urban dance with a contemporary look. Through various group dynamics and choreographic games, they have begun to recognize the body as a tool of communication and artistic expression, they also begin to sense how narratives can be constructed through movement. Later, the exploration of individual and collective movement was deepened, both Aina and Iby motivated the students to experiment with movement sequences created by the students themselves. This process has led to empowering them as creators and giving them a voice in the construction and creation of the piece. In addition, we worked on the relationship with space, understanding how the body can interact with the environment and with the gaze of the camera.
In some of the sessions digital creation tools have been incorporated (with mobile phones, cameras, etc.) this has allowed the participants to explore how dance can also work together with the cinematographic language. They have worked with concepts such as the shot sequence, camera angles and live choreographic montage, emphasizing the simultaneity between action and audiovisual record. The students were able to develop their own storyboards, visualizing how to structure the movements within a cinematographic shot.
During the last month we have focused on the preparation of the open session and on starting to articulate and draw a stage proposal that shows the work done. The aim is not only to present a final result, but for the students to experience the dynamics of a real creation process, assuming active roles in decision-making and in adapting to unforeseen circumstances. Collaboration and dialogue have been fundamental pillars at this stage, as well as the preparation for the open session.
The most significant aspect of this process has been the ability to work in a group to record a live choreographic scene, where each student has assumed a specific role in the collective creation. The process is maintained in constant practice and in an open conversation to strengthen the involvement and creative autonomy of the students. In this sense, Aina, Iby and the teaching staff consider it essential that the students visit the Mercat de les Flors to begin sizing up the place they will inhabit and better understand their relationship with a professional scenic space. This experience can be key to strengthening their link with stage practice and helping them place their creation within a wider context.
EN RESiDÈNCiA is a program of the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona and the Barcelona Education Consortium, designed in cooperation with the A Bao A Qu Association, which brings creators to work for an entire year in the classroom. This work, which concludes with the presentation of a piece, in this case linked to dance and movement, brings creation, education and mediation into dialogue in an intense and meaningful way.
