Open Bazaar

Eric Raymond in his book “The cathedral and the bazaar” tells us about two types of free software: the cathedral model and the bazaar. With the bazaar model, it poses a horizontal, dynamic and bustling dynamic of community work through open source, where users are treated as collaborators as the most appropriate way to improve the code.

With Bazaar open, Graner starts a shared learning and thinking space where to share the tools we work with and the issues that concern and concern us. A space that, with an indeterminate periodicity, invites different professionals to share their particular experience, their practices, methodologies and work tools.

Open Bazaar # 1: Co-management, collaboration and artistic support

We often ask ourselves how we can create an ecosystem of relationships where artistic practice is more sustainable, open and sharable as a common good. As we can be partners, when necessary, to promote dialogue between the artist and diverse communities, beyond a proposal with clear codes of staging, programming and work context. To deepen these issues, we open a space where we will talk about artistic accompaniment, collaborative management and design of knowledge co-production strategies.

This seminar is aimed at performing arts professionals and artists and people who are dedicated to management, production or artistic mediation. We also want to open it to those who are not yet dedicated but who want to approach and know different ways of managing artistic projects.

    • Thursday, November 21st from 10h to 19h: Introduction to the 4D Fluxonomy applied to cultural spaces and projects. Articulation of futurism and new economies in 4 dimensions by Fernando García (in charge of mARTadero – Cochabamba, Bolivia).
    • Friday, November 22nd from 10am to 2pm: The subtexts of the collaboration by María Salazar (cultural producer and currently in Histeria Kolektiboa and participating in the Wikitoki collaborative practices workshop)
    • Saturday, November 23rd from 10am to 2pm: Artistic accompaniment versus artistic management: visions, models and practical exercises by Alessandra Simeoni and Karel Dombrecht (in front of Caravan Productions, art accompaniment office – Brussels)


Open Bazaar #2: Organization Models on the Performing Arts Management

The current contemporary production is not defined by homogenic, systemic and easy-copy methodologies anymore.  Quite the opposite, the processes are taking multiple ways, they are developing at different paces and the outgoing results are being displayed in an endless number of formats: from a traditional performance, an spontaneous gesture, a workshop, an object or it might even develop into a process while in the play… New ways of organizing and working are popping up in order to enable these new ways of operating. 

Their lack of visibility is delaying the development of professional system support to creative workers, which means and important worsening of their work conditions. We need to add up the lack of management professionals that keep a constant link with the artists and their context, and the difficulties found when trying to tour their work around national or international scene, that leaves our professional sector in a very vulnerable position.

 With this event we want to highlight the need to develop new organization models, more sustainable and horizontal ones, as well as ways to collaborate in the performing arts that may show the nature of the artistic community and that enable disengagement from certain old legacy.

In order to think over all these matters and different specific issues we encounter when organizing living arts and contemporary dance projects, we have invited four initiatives that work in different contexts and with different organizational models, and that they address the challenges of the existing performing art creation with management.

 This session is addressed to professionals of performing arts, artists, cultural managers and institutions that are interested in other management formats.


ElClimaMola ( – Catalonia

Our commitment is to accompany the current scenic creation, making it easier for artists and cultural entities to successfully carry out their projects and open up to an increasingly wide audience. We offer tailored services for advice, support and production. We also promote our own visibility projects and bridges for creation. In Elclimamola we function as the nucleus of a constellation of cultural professionals – artists, managers, programmers, creators, experts – both national and international.

SelfMistake ( – Portugal

Self-Mistake is a project to support experimentation and innovation in the area of ​​Contemporary Dance through an annual continuity program on different fronts: financial support during the process, presentation and production consulting.

SPIN ( – Belgium

SPIN’s mission is to provide long-term and high-quality structural support for: individual practices (including research, development, production, external collaborations …), as well as collective content practices.

L’Amicale ( – France

Organization led by artists, L’Amicale is a cooperative platform for live performances and installations. Created in 2010 by 3 artists and 2 producers, it is now a cooperative with 12 artists, 4 producers, 1 director, 1 administrator and a good number of artistic collaborators. Our work ranges from international production to the engineering of cooperative economy models, from philosophy, to self-taught specialization in orchid cultivation.

Open Bazaar # 3: The Digital Paradigm

The cultural and artistic sector is constantly reinventing itself. Artists evolve, public interests change, the socio-political context influences and, of course, new technologies appear and affect the way in which culture is produced and consumed.

The health crisis that we have been suffering since the beginning of this year has pushed the culture sector to find new ways of rethinking itself to overcome the situation, work collaboratively and remain in contact with citizens. In the specific case of the living arts, the debate on the pros and cons of consuming shows through digital platforms has been on the table since the beginning of the pandemic.

Until now, the relationship between the internet and the living arts was summarized in a series of management portals, digital magazines or discussion forums, and some artistic projects that have used it as part of their exploration space. Possibly due to the idiosyncrasy of these arts, designed to generate a meeting space with the public and to be received live, the sector has been suspicious of turning it into a workspace until this current moment in which, not without some debate, it begins to see him as an ally.

In this edition of Bazar, organized in conversation with the AGUABLANDA project, we would like to put on the table the potential of the Internet and the paradigm of the future that they allow us to glimpse.

For this we have created a three-day program. the first, focused on new spaces and tools for creation, where creative options will be presented beyond performances within video software (Zoom or Skype); on the second day we will observe different strategies for artistic promotion and dissemination through social networks; During the third day we will talk with digital platforms that intend to improve the management of the performing arts to build a stronger and more sustainable sector with the help of the internet.

10-14h Workshop with Alex Peña on new spaces for theater
Alex Peña, a transdisciplinary artist, will introduce us to his work, which is situated between theater and new media, and will shed light on what other possible places artists of the living arts could take to continue operating in this present-future.

16-18h Conversation between Alex Peña and Vanina Hofman about theater and the Internet as means for creation
Alex Peña and Vanina Hofman, researcher, teacher and cultural producer will talk about questions such as: What is theater when it happens on the Internet? What points in common do we find between the two media?


16-19h Workshop with Candela Capitán on Instagram in Live Art
Candela Capitán, dancer and performer will analyze what is the objective of the Instagram digital platform, programmed to create content instantly, how it works and how to use it according to our purposes.


17-19h Round table with the Alltheatre, Independent Creation Observatory and Orfheo projects.
Eva Lapuente (Alltheater), Fátima Anlló (Independent Creation Observatory) and Ricardo Toto (Orfheo), will present us digital initiatives to improve the management and promotion of the living arts in digital environments.
