Architectures of Listening: Sound as a Material for Artistic Practice

Within the framework of the Coreografies Elèctriques program at El Graner, this roundtable proposes a meeting between artists who approach sound as matter, space, body, and a device for thinking. Through their practices, sound becomes a tool to reconfigure the relationship between space, body, and audience, raising questions about who listens, what can be heard, and how listening transforms the perception and awareness of the space we occupy/inhabit.

The work of Juan Cristóbal Saavedra and Marc Vilanova unfolds different ways of activating listening, whether by designing sound dramaturgies or by investigating the inaudible that expands the limits of perception.

Juan Cristóbal Saavedra, a.k.a. Equipo, is a Chilean composer and music producer based in Europe since 2001. His artistic research focuses on music, sound, and technology as drivers of sensory experiences. Using the plasticity of sound, he creates open narrative atmospheres that lead both individuals and collectives toward multiple interpretations of reality. He has presented his work at festivals such as Mutek and Sónar and has collaborated with artists such as Roger Bernat, Azkona & Toloza, Marcos Morau, La Veronal, Sonia Gómez, Amaranta Velarde, and Jan Speckenbach. He has also composed music for productions by international companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, and Ballet Nacional de España. He is a resident artist at El Graner 2026 in the research-in-performing-arts-space modality with the project Horizontes sonoros.

Marc Vilanova (Capellades, 1991) is a sound and visual artist based in Barcelona. His works take the form of expanded sculptures that create a dialogue between sound, light, and movement. Through technological and material experimentation, his practice engages with acoustic ecology, posthumanism, and the thresholds of perception. His intimate, sensorial environments invite deep listening as a form of environmental awareness, fostering attunement to the more-than-human world. Vilanova has participated in numerous exhibitions and presentations at cultural institutions, museums, festivals, and international biennials. Recent highlights include BIENALSUR (Buenos Aires, AR), the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art (Riyadh, SA), the Science Gallery (Melbourne, AU), Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, US), Onassis Stegi (Athens, GR), Zorlu Center (Istanbul, TR), FILE (São Paulo, BR), Ars Electronica (Linz, AT), and Tokyo Wonder Site (Tokyo, JP).
