Parafonías (Paraphonies) explores the frictions that occur between the sphere of movement and the sphere of voice and how playing with the distances between them gives rise to an unintended third entity.
The starting point was to observe the harmonies that occur between body and voice during a communicative act: the ways in which, when speaking, gesture and intention support the word, the language, to emphasize its communicative mission. The research arises from the desire to undo the unison and dismantle dominant associations to connect with unknown meanings and ways of doing, allowing for less intuitive relationships and thus unexpected imaginaries to emerge.
When two sound waves of equal frequency are emitted simultaneously, we perceive them as one. However, when two sound waves with a slight difference in their frequencies meet at a point or region in space, they beat against each other, producing a third wave in the human ear.
Blanca Tolsá directs and choreographs Parafonías with the following team: Pepe González and Berta Pascual in movement and voice, Rodrigo Rammsy in sound, and Costanza Paternó as voice consultant.
Blanca Tolsá:
I’m a dancer based in Barcelona, where I’ve trained in contemporary dance and have worked and learned from choreographers such as Lipi Hernández, Ariadna Montfort, Raquel Klein, Albert Quesada, Jacob Gómez, Magdalena Garzón, Anna Macau, Constanza Brcnic, Georgia Vardarou, Núria Guiu, and Paloma Muñoz Siberia. In 2019, I became interested in choreography and embarked on a journey to understand the potential of form in greater depth, exploring its most imperceptible details and investigating what other rhythms (counterphrasing) may arise through exhaustive treatment of textures and journeys of the imagination.
I’m interested in proposing spaces that lead towards the illusory and fantastical, creating dissonant atmospheres that evoke unclassifiable sensations. I work from the relationship between voice and movement and their possible desynchronizations. I premiered Ecoica, my first solo work, at the 2022 Dansa Metropolitana Festival in Barcelona.
