A Place to Dance is a dance research project born from the desire for a multifaceted encounter between Brazilian dancer and choreographer Poliana Lima, based in Madrid, and British flamenco dancer Yinka Esi Graves, based in Seville. It is the wish to share space and time to open a dialogue about heritages, cultural lineages, and alliances in the search for common ground.
Poliana Lima is a 2024 resident at Graner through a public call in the research category.
Poliana Lima is a choreographer, dancer, and teacher based in Madrid since 2010, and she began her creations in 2011. In 2024, she will premiere The Common Ground. In 2022, she premiered Oro Negro at the Autumn Festival in Madrid. In 2020, she premiered Las cosas se mueven pero no dicen nada at the Teatros del Canal in co-production with the Festival Días da Dança/Teatro Rívoli in Porto and the Centre National de la Danse* in Paris. In 2021, she was a selected artist for Aerowaves. Taking the body as the central object of her expression, she explores the possibilities of creating a poetic stage that can communicate simply and deeply with the audience. Themes such as identity and memory are recurring in her creations, as well as the relationship between creation and pedagogy, which she considers a fundamental part of her work as an artist.
Yinka Esi Graves is a British creator, choreographer, and flamenco artist. Her work explores the links between flamenco and other contemporary forms from a personal perspective rooted in the Afro-diaspora. Her first solo stage work, The Disappearing Act, premiered at the Flamenco Festival in Nîmes (France) in 2023 and has been presented at numerous international festivals, including the Grec Festival, La Bâtie, and the Avignon Festival, among others.
