Open studio by Yinka Esi Graves

Yinka Esi Graves opens up her creative process for Mas, a piece she is developing as a Graner resident artist in the creation strand.

“I’m interested in when dance is driven not by an urge to achieve an aesthetic goal but by the body’s desire to feel itself in relation to music, both within itself and also within its chosen community. In Mas, I ask myself: What would my dance be like if nobody were watching? Where does that dance take the body? Through this question, I explore issues of respectability and expectation. The personal becomes a starting point for a broader enquiry. In this work, I trace a direct musical and physical dialogue between flamenco and the Caribbean.”
