Federico Vladimir and Pablo Lilienfeld presents Mónica. Episode 2. Federico and Pablo are resident artists of Graner 2023 through a public call, in the creation category.
Mónica is the name of their two mothers. Both were born in Argentina in the 1950s, daughters of European refugees fleeing Nazi Germany and communist Yugoslavia. Mónica Lilienfeld was a painter and died very young in 1986. Mónica Pezdirc undressed in all the erotic photographs taken by her husband throughout her life. The images created by their two mothers are the starting material to create this new project. Mónica seeks to subvert linear and teleological genealogy. Horizontal and non-heteronormative maternal relationships are as important as patrilineal verticality.
“We have been together since 2014. We live and work between Brussels and A Coruña. Our work has been intertwined with our relationship. ‘Narrating oneself is caring for oneself’ we always say: we start from intimacy to explore representations of collectivity that question hegemonic forms of belonging and narrating ourselves. Using speculative fiction as a world-building tool, we create spaces where the domestic, playful, marginal, and desire converge. Our performances, films, and installations are populated by family members, friends, lovers, viruses, ghosts, and other companions.”
