Second Phase of the Shared Research Project between Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, La Central del Circ, and Graner on Artistic Creation with Communities and in the Territory
This second phase is structured around laboratories conducted from April to June 2021. During the first quarter of the year, the three participating Fàbriques have been designing these laboratories from a shared starting point: the analysis, tools, methodologies, strategies, and reports obtained during the Biennial of Thought 2020, organized around this framework of thought. The components that make up the laboratories will stem from the needs and desires expressed by participants in each territory. Each Fàbrica begins from a very different place, defined by its history, its relationship with the territory and community, and its unique area of action. However, they start from collective questions: how can we achieve a common narrative among Fàbriques that does not homogenize but respects the differences and realities that make us unique? What drives the Fàbriques to promote collective actions with and for the community?
In this second phase, Dianelis Diéguez joins to support the research, ensuring a global and collective vision for the project, which benefits from collective coordination between the three facilities, enriching and influencing perspectives and ways of working, learning from one another. This phase of the project concluded with a joint session on June 21 at Hangar, where research and creation processes, reflections, and experiences were shared with participants from the three laboratories and the network of Fàbriques.
Graner Laboratory 2021
- For Graner, the laboratory is a research and co-creation process between artists Pere Jou and Aurora Bauzà and the Aventureras (neighbors who are part of the Sant Cristòfol Choir from the La Marina neighborhood). Mª Àngels, Enriqueta, Amàlia, Mª Luisa, Sole, and Isabel chose this name for themselves a few months ago when they first participated in a contemporary creation at Graner. With Aquí i no allà, Pere Jou and Aurora Bauzà propose an artistic research project on the relationship between the body, voice, and the mechanisms of constructing individual and collective identity, addressing issues such as vulnerability and empowerment. This project is designed as a joint investigation between the artists and the neighbors, working from memories and life stories rooted in the territory to develop a performative mechanism that blends opera and contemporary dance. It is a mutual influence between creators and Aventureras, while forging new relationships between the Fàbrica’s communities and the neighborhood.

The laboratory initiated by Ateneu Popular 9 Barris is designed as a space to create emotional bonds, allowing participants to express themselves freely and experience positive emotions during these dark times. Using the life stories of participants—tales of struggle and resilience—the goal is to create a space for mutual support where experiences can be shared while giving visibility to the socioeconomic inequalities and/or oppressions faced by the inhabitants. The participant group consists of 15 individuals ranging from 13 to 76 years old, men and women from diverse backgrounds and origins, accompanied by Rufi Rodríguez (a circus artist with extensive experience in community projects) and Lorena Hernández (an actress with significant experience in social theater projects and community creation in the region).

ASSENTAMents is the laboratory proposed by La Central del Circ, featuring an initial phase of field research with Ro Caminal and a second phase of creative research with Jorge Albuerne. This laboratory is aimed at the artistic community and collaborates with individuals from the area who have experience in the discussed themes. The project draws from the memories of those who once lived in Camp de la Bota. The central theme is the past and present situation of informal settlements in the Besòs-Maresme neighborhood, with the goal of applying methodologies for approaching a territory and its people while exploring artistic devices that can shape the information and voices collected during the research phase.
