Under what parameters, today, here, do we look at and name that which dances? How can we speak about other people’s artistic work without reproducing violence, from a place of radical understanding and kindness? Does the gaze trap the dancing body? Does the mouth eat the dance? Which eyes and which tongues affirm or deny certain bodies and certain dances?
Ojolengua arises from the personal research of Joaquín Collado and Natalia Fernandes. Starting from an exercise in observation of the narrow, authoritarian forms that the gaze and language often exert on the practice of others, this study group proposes to put essentialist approaches to the body into crisis in order to rehearse other forms of accompaniment and aesthetic reception.
Understanding that both what we see and what we say are shaped by specific contexts, symbolic hierarchies and power relations, the group proposes to set in motion issues such as the politics of feedback, the relationship with institutions or the desire of the spectator, with the aim of shifting, complicating and widening our frames of reference.
