In this workshop, I aim to share some of the tools I have developed and put into practice throughout my work with the company Societat Doctor Alonso. Tools to guide me through the creative process and to leave traces that help in making decisions.
I have often taken the liberty of calling myself a dramaturg, not as someone who works on stories and characters, but from the role of someone who observes, recognises and works with the internal structures that are built up, layer by layer, during the process of creating a piece. I understand the creation of a piece as the construction of a system of premises and criteria that, little by little, generates a kind of enigma. An enigma that we do not know beforehand and that we will have to solve as the work process unfolds.
Starting from a theme is not the same as starting from a form. Nor is starting from a personal desire the same as starting from the need to learn something we do not yet know. Each starting point opens a different path. Sometimes, finding what allows us to take the first step is only the beginning. Then the real work starts, which consists as much of inventing our own tools as of venturing into a territory that, for a while, we will have to traverse blindly.
As I understand creation, the clearer the limits we set for this structure we call a work, the greater its capacity to offer us tools to work with. It is not about knowing in advance where we are going, but about building conditions that allow us to move forward, recognise what is happening and make decisions.
That is what this workshop is about.
We will also have the collaboration of Núria Corominas, performer and creator, with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Girona (UdG) and co-creator of the collective Las Huecas. With Núria we will work on text, not only as what is said on stage, but also as a tool for thinking through and tensioning our ethical and poetic relationship with our work.
