“The Intimate Square” was a proposal by Vulnus, live arts and research, which opened up the public space of the neighborhood. In this very particular square, human books, biographical pages, chapters of stories, and anecdotes were uncovered, free from prejudices and preconceived ideas. Reading with others, reading to others, allowing oneself to be read by others… this was the essence of inhabiting an intimate square. Behind the passersby wandering aimlessly through the streets and squares were people exposed to the harshness of life, with stories to tell. Parallel to this action, and intersecting with Vulnus’ work, Nyamnyam proposed opening a collective conversation while sharing a bite to eat, to bring stories into the common space, understanding the various ways of doing, explaining, and inhabiting, among others. In this way, they sought to begin building foundations from the intangible, imagining possible tables as contexts for action and resilience, the cornerstones of their research project tied to the La Marina neighborhood.
The Intimate Square had an initial opening phase in July 2019, as part of Boombeta, and a final presentation in November 2019 at Sala G in El Graner. Its creation process was carried out through weekly sessions and the creative laboratory “Els Llindars” (The Thresholds), which in March 2019 posed questions such as: How does the spectator’s and actor’s gaze work? How is vulnerability present? What is the territory of one’s own body? (with collaboration in the lab from Mariona Naudin, an artist associated with El Graner 2019-20, and live music by Guillem Rizzotto).
Creating openings in public spaces,
unprecedented scenarios of humanity,
like blades of grass
breaking through the cracks in the asphalt.
The Intimate Square,
a place for the face of the other,
to see them, to see ourselves, to encounter,
to pause and converse.
Some human books are read,
some singular stories are told.
Behind each of us,
behind every unfamiliar body,
are individuals exposed
to the harshness of life.
The Intimate Square is a human place,
a space of resistance against the neoliberal whirlwind,
against frenzy, haste,
and the uninhabitability of the world we live in.
