Natalia Fernandes

I am a Brazilian performer and creator based in Spain since 2017. My dance training developed within the university context (UNICAMP) and the contemporary scene in São Paulo. Additionally, there are my experiences with various choreographers in Germany, Israel, Spain, India, etc., and my experience as a creator and teacher in countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the USA. In 2017, I began my research into the Invented Anatomy method and my authorial work in Spain, where I have already collaborated with Jesús Rubio Gamo, Celso Gimenéz/La Tristura, Poliana Lima, among others. My most recent creation, El Carnaval No És Alegre – TINY-DESK, premiered at the TNT Festival 2023 and at Conde Duque – Madrid. In the dynamic balance between my work as a performer, teaching practice, and the creation of my autonomous projects is where my body dances.

Residency project

Invented Anatomy or How to Have a Dancer’s Body is a project reflecting on the body through physical practice that transforms sweat into thought, and thought into sweat. Seeking to understand the body as anatomy and discourse, Natalia Fernandes aims to find new forms – word, image, writing – to reflect on what we mean when we talk about a dancer’s body. Promoting an encounter between the body and imagination, Invented Anatomy seeks to question discourses and reinvent anatomy. Toni Morrison says: “Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined.” We ask ourselves: And who defines a body?
