The Black Box

The Graner Black Box is the centre’s collective documentation methodology for the processes developed by residents selected through its open call programme. The starting point for these traces consists of questions from other residents about their project that emerge during the Aplec, bibliographic references, and initial intuitions. At the beginning of each residency, the resident receives an envelope to be gradually filled with more and more traces. At different moments throughout the year, Graner proposes questions or activities to gather new materials and, at the end of the year, invites an artist/writer to open the envelopes and create a speculative narrative about what has taken place in each process.

As a form of speculative storytelling, we commission a text that brings everything together, that encounters for the first time the surprises found in the envelopes and imagines around the comings and goings of the artists. This exercise in affective archaeology gives words to the often intangible margins of creation.
