In January, we launched classroom activities with the various educational projects of the Caixa d’Eines program. Regarding the primary school groups: Clàudia Solwat began working with the 4th-grade class at Escola Bàrkeno with her project Your Body, Your Teacher, and Emma Villavechia also started working with the 4th-grade class at Escola Enric Granados, with her project SENTIENS.
This year presents an interesting parallel between the two groups, who propose a similar methodology by organizing themselves as research teams. They explore themes around the body and anatomy (Clàudia Solwat), and the senses (Emma Villavechia). As part of the program, both groups had the opportunity to attend two performances as audience members. They saw COPIAR by Animal Religion at the Mercat de les Flors (on January 10 and 13 respectively), and also a showing of SUBJECT, VERB, PREDICATE by Condegalí at El Graner (on March 5). Offering this type of experience to students is always valuable, as it gives them access to performing arts programming with close guidance and a perspective that ties directly into the content and artistic practices explored in class.
The two artists leading the primary education projects also offered family workshops at El Graner, as part of the PETIT FORMAT series, which took place on March 8 with Emma Villavechia, and March 29 with Clàudia Solwat.
As for secondary education, this term saw the rollout of Joao Lima’s project with 3rd-year ESO students from the Institut Montjuïc’s Living Arts course, and Maria Ferrer’s project with 2nd-year ESO students from the Institut Domènech’s Activar class. These groups also attended performances: on March 25, they came to El Graner to see INAUDIT by Adrián Vega and Adriano Galante, followed by a post-show conversation with the artists. Notably, Joao Lima’s group from Institut Montjuïc held a follow-up session at El Graner the next day, where a fruitful dialogue and reflection space was created with Adrián Vega, allowing them to delve deeper into the previous day’s experience.
We also went to the Mercat de les Flors to see the performance JARANA, by Laia Santanach, on April 10. The students from Institut Domènech, part of Maria Ferrer’s group, created a small written correspondence through an interview with choreographer Laia Santanach. In May, El Graner is offering the FORA DE JOC program, a series of movement sessions led by Maria Ferrer and Joao Lima, aimed at local teenagers.
Another initiative launched this term was the SESSIONS ON TRANSMISSION BETWEEN ARTISTIC PRACTICE AND THE EDUCATIONAL SPHERE: a training program for artists and educators, accredited by the Pedagogical Resource Center. These sessions were led by CondeGalí, Laura Alcalà Freudenthal, and Àngela Peris. There were three 3-hour sessions, each guided by an artist who shared tools, experiences, and insights on the relationship between artistic and teaching practices. It was a highly enriching meeting space for educators, artists, and professionals working across both fields.
El Graner’s educational program is part of Caixa d’Eines, promoted by Barcelona’s Pla de Barris, which introduces artistic practices into the school curriculum to reduce inequalities between neighborhoods. At El Graner, the program is mediated by Mireia de Querol.
