Creation and Museums 2026

Within the framework of the city programme Creació i Museus 2026, the Museu Picasso Barcelona and Graner once again collaborate to build a working space that brings together the concerns and objectives of both institutions in relation to contemporary artistic creation and the heritage of the city of Barcelona. As a result of this dialogue, creators Carmela Muñoz and Juan Carlos Lérida have been commissioned to work together on a site-specific piece for the museum, which will be presented within the programme as part of the Grec Festival de Barcelona.

Lo inevitable: entre la rítmica y la mística (The Inevitable: between rhythm and mysticism), by Carmela Muñoz and Juan Carlos Lérida

Understanding the work as a vessel for experiences and practices that pass through bodies, Carmela Muñoz and Juan Carlos Lérida look at Picasso’s work through their own. Like a revealing distortion, like a sense of suspended time. A kind of mirage that allows the inevitable to manifest.

This project offers Juan Carlos Lérida and Carmela Muñoz the opportunity to meet in a way that is unprecedented for them. If their connection had previously been defined by a generational transmission, it now unfolds on a horizontal plane, where their work—shaped by trajectories, contexts, and a shared exploration of rhythm and mysticism—enters into dialogue with that of Pablo Picasso, like a mirage.

The methodological research understands the work as a life experience that passes through bodies and that, in this case, unfolds within a triangular relationship with Picasso’s work and the heritage space of the Museum. Like him, the artists share Andalusian roots and an artistic development in Barcelona. Their work has been forged through orthodox techniques that, at the same time, have driven them to question and transgress them, in a gesture that is both rebellion and love.

Along this path, a deep relationship with flamenco also emerges: in Picasso, through the tension of the line; in them, through the rhythm and mysticism that inhabit bodies and spaces. This is a research project in which Picasso’s work becomes a catalyst for recognition and reflection within their own practices. A way of bending time and embracing the inevitable. It is now.
